About Downtown Las Vegas

Prior to the Strip, Downtown Las Vegas was the original townsite and gambling district. Downtown Las Vegas is in the center of Las Vegas Valley, and just north of the strip filled with cultural centers, hotels, and historical buildings. Spanish for “the meadows”, Las Vegas got its name from the beautiful green grasses and lively desert springs in the area in the 1800s. Las Vegas was founded in 1905, although it wasn’t incorporated as a city until 1911. 1931 marks a crucial year for Las Vegas as gambling had been made legal, and in 1951 atomic bombs were tested only 65 miles away from where residents could see the mushroom clouds. Downtown Las Vegas has a rich history both in the books and the entertainment industry.
